Peter Muttart is a founding partner of muttarts law firm, which was established in 1969 as Thorpe Buntain Muttart. He began practice as a general practitioner, being engaged in most areas of the law. Peter was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1984. This honour recognizes his professional integrity, good character and outstanding contribution to the practice of law.

Active in the law:

In injury litigation, Peter has represented parties in cases ranging from general injury to brain injury and fatalities. He presented the case for damages in a lengthy wrongful death jury trial of some note in the State of Texas.

In commercial, corporate and real estate law, Peter has represented business, other commercial enterprises, industries and lenders, large and small.

He is a trade-mark agent.

In estate planning and probate law, Peter advises in the area of Wills, succession planning, general estate planning and trusts.

In the area of municipal law, Peter has advised municipal councils and staff for over 25 years.

In each of his areas of practice, Peter has conducted trial work where necessary.

Active in the community:

Peter has served his community at local, provincial and regional levels. His involvement includes: Commissioner of the Village of Port Williams, Church Trustee, member of the Annapolis Valley Chapter of the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia, President of the Rotary Club of Kentville, President of the Eastern Kings Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the V.O.N. Kings Branch, chair of Kentville’s Community Economic Development Committee, lecturer at Acadia University’s ALL program, member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society Council, President of the Kings County Barristers’ Society, head of the Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce, and Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

As a Chairperson, Mediator, and Participant in Dispute Resolution:

Peter has considerable experience in parliamentary procedure. He has co-chaired annual meetings of the Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce in three Atlantic Provinces and National meetings of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. He is a trained mediator. His credentials in this area, and his reputation for impartiality, qualify him to chair and mediate in a variety of areas.

Awards:

Peter has received many accolades in addition to being appointed Queen’s Counsel, including: a Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Kentville; volunteer of the year award for activity with the local arts community; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Eastern Kings Chamber of Commerce. He is a past director of the Council for Canadian Unity and is a director of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews.

Peter resides in Starr’s Point near Port Williams with his wife Janet Muttart.
