Douglas W. Lutz
Senior Counsel
& Firm Manager
Doug has acted as counsel for both plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of legal proceedings including acting in negligence actions involving catastrophic personal injuries and cases involving professional liability . He has successfully represented clients involved in complex litigation, corporate and commercial disputes, construction lawsuits, land-use and land ownership disputes, estate litigation, actions against government, and actions for defamation. He has appeared before the National Energy Board and before provincial regulatory authorities in respect of utility and energy-related matters. Doug has advised major corporate and commercial enterprises in respect of a range of legal issues including project development, construction, tendering, employment law and risk management. He has assisted large property developers, a major shopping centre operator, the proponent of an energy mega-project, a national construction company and universities.
One of the clear advantages of his lengthy experience in litigation is the ability to advise business clients on the best ways to avoid risk and unwanted litigation. Doug believes that good lawyering involves the application of good judgment to render good advice, which provides valuable service to clients. When claims are unavoidable he brings imaginative and innovative solutions to bear to resolve disputes in a cost-effective manner without absorbing vast amounts of a client’s financial resources.
Doug has lectured lawyers, judges and students on trial advocacy, cross-examination, media and defamation law, risk management, construction law and client relations. At various times over the last 35 years he has been recognized by his peers in legal publications as one of the best media and defamation, construction, corporate/commercial litigation and personal injury litigation lawyers in Canada.
Following his relocation to Wolfville from Calgary in 1998 Doug was, for almost 5 years, the Managing Partner of a mid-size Halifax law firm. He recently left his position with one of the largest regional firms in Atlantic Canada to work closer to home and to assist businesses and individuals in the Annapolis Valley.
